I guess I should do some sort of birthday post. It’s a nice geeky number too: Three to the power of three. So, happy belated birthday me, I suppose.

This was possibly the first time I celebrated with three large-ish meals almost back to back (dinner on Saturday night at Brazil Churrasco at Sixth Avenue, Sunday afternoon at Tao’s, and then Sunday night with a fabulous home-cooked meal). But more interesting to me was that this was the first birthday on which I received a large number of birthday greetings and wishes, far more than usual.

The fact that nearly all of these were received via Facebook, and mostly because Facebook reminds you of your friends’ birthdays, only somewhat diminishes the impact of them all.

For me anyway. Since the App Store launched several weeks ago I’ve been downloading and purchasing iPhone applications in preparation for getting my own iPhone, and I already have quite the library of apps sitting on my iMac, just waiting to be synced over to an iPhone.

Of course, if any of these apps turns out to cause any sort of system instability, trying to isolate which of these apps is the source of the problems will be a pretty big headache…

That is, until mid-July, when tomorrow.sg alerted us to a new street directory site called gothere.sg.

gothere.sg has a very simple interface: enter in your starting location and intended destination, and it’ll tell you how to get there by any of three methods: bus only, bus and train, or by car. It’ll give you point-by-point instructions, including walking directions, as well as time and cost estimations. If you choose the driving route, it also offers to try and provide a route that avoids ERP gantries where possible, though this option is still being tested.

The maps it displays use the Google Maps API, which means you can do everything with their map that you can do with a Google Map: zoom, scroll, add notes, and so on.

The site isn’t without flaws; I’ve noticed sometimes that it’ll tell me it takes 79 minutes to walk from one bus stop to another across the road, or some such silly thing like that. But generally I’ve found it to be an incredibly useful site. It provides extremely useful information without letting the interface get in the way, unlike streetdirectory.com which is laden with all sorts of advertising and encumbered with an old clunky interface. If streetdirectory.com is Web 1.0, gothere.sg is certainly it’s Web 2.0 offspring.

This is several months old by now, but I only found this today thanks to TWiT and Wired. Here are some interesting stats about the video game market in the United States:

38% of gamers are female

the average age of gamers is 33 years old

the average age of frequent game purchasers is 38 years old

So it would be nice if people would stop referring to video games as being “for kids”. Clearly, for a generation that grew up playing video games, there’s still a certain stigma attached to that particular choice of leisure activity. But the game makers have grown up together with the gamers, and the video game industry has correspondingly grown up as well. (And clearly, video games aren’t just a guy thing either.)

I’m a geek, and I’m damn proud of it.
